Diane Ernestine Earle Ross was born in Detroit in 1944 and is a singer, actress, and record producer. She began her musical journey at the age of 15 by joining the Primettes; a sister group of a male vocal group called The Primes. In 1961, they changed their name to the Supremes and 2 years later, they had their first hit with the single ‘When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes’ hitting #23 on Billboard's Hot 100 Pop chart. She began her solo career in 1970 with her eponymous debut album and it topped Billboard’s Top R&B and Hip Hop Albums chart. Her musical style is best described as a blend of R&B, soul, disco, jazz, pop, and dance. She went on to have a stellar career with 24 studio albums, 5 live albums, 30 compilation albums, 1 extended play, 91 singles, 4 soundtrack albums, and she’s sold over 100 million records worldwide. She’s received many accolades including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was inducted (as a member of the Supremes) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 .
