Slayer was formed in Huntington Park (California) in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. Their early work was full of fast and aggressive material created with breakneck speed and an instrumental prowess that combined the structure of hardcore punk tempos and speed metal. Their musical style has evolved to include fast tremolo picking, double bass drumming, riffs in irregular scales, shouted vocals, all blended with lyrics and album art covering topics such as murder, serial killers, necrophilia, torture, genocide, human experimentation, Satanism, hate crimes, terrorism, religion, anti-religion, Nazism, and warfare. Their music has caused a lot controversy resulting in album bans, delays, lawsuits, and criticism from religious groups and the public. Despite this, they’ve has become one of the most influential bands in heavy metal history and many renowned bands (Bullet for My Valentine, Slipknot, Gojira, Hatebreed, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Kreator, Mayhem, Darkthrone, System of a Down, Lamb of God, Behemoth, Evile, and Lacuna Coil) cite Slayer as a major influence. The band’s been through many line-up changes over the years and it currently consists of Kerry King and Gary Holt on guitars, Tom Araya (vocals, bass), and Paul Bostaph (drums)
